MOTORSPORTS FINISHES 4th AT VIR
12 LAPS OF GREEN AND UNNECESSARY CONTACT PROHIBIT #38 &
#84 FROM SHINING WHILE #83 PORSCHE CARRIES THE TORCH
(Daytona Beach, FL-May 11, 2006) Tim Traver and Mikel Miller
finished 4th in the SimpleNet.com Porsche 996 to deliver their
best ever Grand-Am Cup finish. Preliminary calculations show
that this finish could secure them the 4th place spot in the
2006 team championship but only the release of the official
standings will tell.
Saturday’s Grand-Am Cup 200 at VIR was dominated by
one car and one car only: the pace car. The field never saw
more than 12 laps of green flag racing as the combination
of rain, over 80 cars and overly optimistic passing attempts
turned the 2.5 hour event into a 63 mph lead-follow session.
The #83 Porsche 996 of Miller and Traver soldiered on and
kept its nose clean to finish an outstanding 4th while posting
the 3rd quickest lap time for the 83 car field.
When the green flag dropped, Mark Plummer in the #38 Porsche
delivered yet another clean opening stint using discretion
and experience to keep his car in great position despite the
rain and slippery conditions. Strategies for all three cars
were decided before the start of the race and would have been
executed as discussed but an actual race never restarted after
the first series of caution laps. During these first laps
the #84 Rhinestone Roxy/HighDefSpex/Car Doctor World Porsche
of Ryan Pilla pitted for rain tires as the downpour continued.
When the green flag came out on the back stretch, Pilla’s
day was over before he knew it when a Porsche hit Pilla after
it was hit by a Mustang that chose to rejoin the racing surface
unsafely. Both Ryan Pilla and Beau Buisson were greatly disappointed
that they did not have the chance to apply their new Porsche
knowledge.
Despite not having many opportunities, Mark Plummer in the
#38 Porsche continued to advance position and stay clean making
it up to 4th place. The fact that a green flag race never
resumed would relegate the #38 Porsche to losing valuable
track position with no hope of making it up. To make matters
worse, a stumble from continued atrophy of the fuel system
due to the Sunoco fuel reared its ugly head again causing
the car to have to pit under green for analysis by the team.
Craig Stanton was able to regain some track position while
having to diagnose the problem, recycle the cars electrical
system and launch the car over curbs with the hopes of knocking
loose any clogging sediments or materials.
The team returns home to Daytona Beach with three days to
prepare for round #3 of the 2006 Grand-Am Cup GS championship
and head to California’s Laguna Seca Raceway.
