| Craig
Stanton to Make Rolex Series Return at Watkins Glen
LONG BEACH, Calif., August 12, 2004 – Craig Stanton will make his Grand
American Rolex Sports Car Series SGS class return with Friday
afternoon’s Sahlen’s 200 at The Glen. The Long
Beach, California-driver will compete in one of a trio of
Orison Marketing-Planet Earth Porsche 911 GT3 Cup entries
at Watkins Glen (NY) International. The GoJo/ NRAuto.com Porsche
is owned by the Nonnamaker family, the same family that owns
and prepares TheRaceSite.com Porsche 996 Stanton has used
to dominate the Grand-Am Cup GS class in 2004. Stanton, the
Grand-Am Cup point leader, has been asked to drive the Planet
Earth Motorsports Porsche in the 200-mile race to assist the
three-car team in winning the 2004 Rolex Series SGS championship.
Out of the ordinary is the fact that Stanton will race the
with no co-driver.
Stanton has competed in four races thus far in the 2004 Rolex
Series taking the SGS class victory at Homestead-Miami Speedway
and a podium-finish at Phoenix. However, with the closing
of the team he opened the year with, Stanton was left without
a fulltime Rolex Series ride and missed three races in the
interim. With the call from the Nonnamakers to add their blue
and green Porsche to his resume, Stanton makes his return
at the same track he last drove in SGS class on June 20th.
Then, co-driving with his Grand-Am Cup and American Le Mans
Series (ALMS) GT class teammate David Murry, Stanton led the
class until gearbox failure in the AASCO Motorsports entry
ended his day.
A same day, tape delay broadcast of The Sahlen’s 200
at The Glen can be seen Friday, August 13 on SPEED Channel
at 10 pm (EDT). Zippo live timing and scoring of the event
can be found at www.grandamerican.com .
Craig Stanton: “It’s a real honor that the Nonnamakers
called and asked me to try and help them win the SGS class
championship. I am going to do my best for sure. This class
has some of the hardest competition you’ll face anywhere,
starting with the other two Planet Earth Porsches. So, it
will be a real battle. We started this year off with the goal
of winning the SGS class title for Porsche but that didn’t
quite work out the way I had planned. So, now we’ll
see if we can help the Nonnamakers win it for Porsche. Watkins
Glen is a great place for me to join the team. The Glen is
one of my favorite tracks whether we are on the long course
or the short course like this weekend. I’m really, really
excited to be racing for the Nonnamakers in both the Rolex
Series and the Grand-Am Cup. We’re going to do our best
to be a part of two championships for them.”
